February 15, 2020 marks the two-year anniversary of the Belmont County Powhatan Point wellpad explosion, which resulted in one of the largest-ever methane leaks in the country. Over 60,000 tons of methane were released into the atmosphere until the well could be plugged three weeks later.
Events like the Powhatan Point wellpad explosion are rare, but very dangerous. Unfortunately, methane emissions from oil and gas operations are not rare. Methane emissions pose a constant threat to Ohioans’ health and exacerbate climate change.
Last August, the EPA proposed rescinding the New Source Performance Standards for methane, a move that would eliminate limits on methane emissions and regularly mandated monitoring and repairs for over 900,000 oil and gas sites across the country.
We must do more to protect our communities. While the public comment period for the EPA’s proposal has passed, it’s not too late to tell your senators to stand up against methane pollution.
Use this form to thank Senator Sherrod Brown for supporting strong methane standards and ask Senator Rob Portman to do the same!
