Subject: SAVE Act Threatens Our Democracy and Harms Voter Rights

Message:

Dear Representative: I am writing as your constituent to voice my strong opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 22). The SAVE Act is a fundamental threat to our democracy. The SAVE Act will make it more difficult for millions of citizens to register to vote and cast a ballot, regardless of their party affiliation. - This bill would require unreasonable proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register or update voter registration. Over 2.4 million Ohio women do not have a name that matches their birth certificate, thus disqualifying their right to vote based on the SAVE Act. - The SAVE Act would upend online voter registration, currently practiced in 42 states with extremely rare occurrences of voter fraud. In Ohio, online voter registration has increased voter participation and access while also increasing efficiency for the Ohio Secretary of State’s office. The SAVE Act is a direct attack on our voting systems in Ohio. - The SAVE Act would require states to conduct ongoing voter purges, including purges based on data sets that are known to be error-ridden. For example, in a recent voter purge in Alabama that relied on data from the state's Department of Labor, 93.8% of the voters removed were U.S. citizens. - Our democracy thrives when everyone, regardless of race, gender, party affiliation, income, or zip code, has an equal voice in the decisions that influence our future. Congress should uphold the ability of every citizen to exercise their right to vote. We strongly urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and support legislation that strengthens our elections and all eligible voters’ access to the ballot box.
