The Antiquities Act of 1906 has protected nearly half of the National Parks that now exist, and is an important conservation tool. First championed and signed into law by President Teddy Roosevelt, the Antiquities Act has been used by 16 presidents on both sides of the political aisle to protect important federal landmarks. Now, President Trump and Congress appear intent on squashing the Antiquities Act as a favor for coal and uranium mining interests.
Three bills pending in Congress take direct aim at this bedrock conservation law. H.R. 3990 -- the “Anti-Teddy Roosevelt Bill” would gut the Antiquities Act by making it virtually impossible for future presidents to designate new national monuments. In addition, H.R. 4532 and H.R. 4558 seek to ratify President Trump’s dramatic and legally questionable reduction of two very important national monuments -- Bears Ears (85% reduction) and Grand Staircase-Escalante (47% reduction), respectively.
