Big and Little Darby Creeks are jewels of Central Ohio and the Midwest. They are two of the most pristine and ecologically significant streams in the nation. Unfortunately, some of the federally-listed species, including mussels, have declined in recent decades within the Big Darby Creek Watershed. Current protections, including designation as an Outstanding State Resource Water, have not proven to be sufficient to meet the state’s antidegradation responsibilities as development in the region continues.
It’s clear to us: the Big and Little Darby Creeks deserve a new designation as Outstanding National Resource Waters — the highest level of protection afforded under the Clean Water Act. This would be an historic first for Ohio, since the Ohio EPA hasn’t granted this status to any of Ohio’s waterways.
