Tell your Representative: Stand up for our democracy! No on HJR 1

We must take action today to protect our right to direct democracy.

The Ohio House is actively considering House Joint Resolution (HJR) 1 and House Bill (HB) 144. And the Ohio Senate is actively considering Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 2 and Senate Bill (SB) 92. We must oppose these measures

HJR 1/SJR 2 would make it more difficult for Ohioans to pass constitutional amendments, increasing the vote threshold to 60%. It’s simply unfair. Constitutional amendments have required a simple majority to pass for over a century, and there’s no reason to change that.

HB 144/SB 92 is designed specifically to create a special election in August 2023 with the hopes that this bad policy will be approved in a low turnout election. The General Assembly wants to put HJR 1/SJR 2 on the ballot in August at a time when less than 10% of the voting population of Ohio typically shows up to the polls. They know HJR 1/SJR 2 is unpopular, so they’re playing games to slip it into law covertly. All at the expense of our tax dollars. Special elections cost a lot of money.

Take action now and contact your representative. Tell them to vote NO on HJR 1/SJR 2 and HB 144/SB 92.

Dear Representative, As a resident of your district, I am asking you to oppose HJR 1 and HB 144. I personally care about the health of Ohio’s democracy because I care about Ohio’s environment. I want to see a functional democracy that uplifts the voices of Ohioans and our desire to ensure clean air, land, and water for all our communities. Ohio should be a welcoming place for people of all backgrounds. I am disappointed to see the General Assembly taking actions to restrict my right to direct democracy through HJR 1 and HB 144. HJR 1 is an unnecessary constitutional amendment. It’s simply bad policy. Ohioans have passed constitutional amendments by a simple majority for over a century, and there’s no reason to change a system that isn’t broken. Ohio voters are smart enough to see bad policy when it’s on the ballot. Very few citizen-initiated constitutional amendments pass. I’m not worried about special interests putting bad policy in the Ohio Constitution—I’m worried about Ohioans losing the ability to propose amendments they want to see on the ballot. The amendments in HJR 1 will make it more likely that only “special interests” can propose constitutional amendments, given the cost for a campaign will only skyrocket with the proposed changes. I also urge you to oppose HB 144. If HJR 1 does go to the ballot for Ohioans to consider, it should be on the ballot during a General Election, not during an August Special Election. August special elections have the lowest voter turnout amongst all the elections. And creating a special election specifically for HJR 1 is a waste of my tax dollars. If HJR 1 is supposedly good for Ohioans and their constitution, then it should be put to a vote during an election when a majority of Ohioans show up to the polls. As my legislator, I hope you’ll do the right thing and represent my interests at the Ohio General Assembly. HJR 1 and HB 144 are detrimental to our democracy. Oppose them and vote no.
